Winter is fading to a distant memory here on the Sunshine Coast and skin baring season is on its way in. All you need to shed the scaly winter skin are three ingredients that can be found in most well stocked pantries.
- Coconut Oil
- Brown Sugar
The quantities used will depend on how much scrub you would like to make. For a decent one all ‘over body scrub’ application; four tablespoons or brown sugar, three tablespoons of coconut oil and the juice of half a small lime should just about do it. The only tricky thing about this recipe is that your coconut oil will have to be fairly solid for it to work, so if you are somewhere warm put the oil in the fridge to solidify before you attempt it.
Mix all your ingredients together and voila, you have a delicious (yes it’s edible but full of sugar) body scrub in under a minute. I have never ‘stored’ this product, having just left it on the bench in the bathroom for a couple of days with no problems. An educated guess suggests it should be fine to keep in the fridge or a cool dark place for a short period of time but that being said dabble at your own risk.
To use simply apply to moist skin rubbing in circular movements from your ankles up. You will know what your skin can handle so use a pressure and duration that suits you. I usually use a medium pressure and scrub for around a minute. As the coconut oil warms it will turn to liquid making it a oily sugary scrubbing session. Rinse the rest of the product off with water in a warm shower. You will still feel a light oil film on your skin when you get out of the shower. Pat dry with a towel and give your skin to absorb the coconut oil. No need to moisturise. The consistency and results remind me a little of the Spa Wisdom Africa Ximenia and Salt Scrub that someone gifted me years back, but for the eineey-meeeniest price tag.
Coconut oil is an amazing skin product with many websites listing its benefits, like all ‘super foods’ it is surrounded by loads of hype but from personal experience I can safely say I love it as a moisturiser (and on kale chips). Combined with sugar as a grainy exfoliant, and lime as a natural alpha hydroxyl exfoliant, I am hoping that its continual use will assist with my Keratosis Pilaris a super common bumpy skin condition that plagues many of us.
Heres hoping that my bumpy upper arms disappear like the many others who claim that exfoliation and coconut oil have healed theirs!
