Hi There!

If you’ve found your way to this page of resources for the first time, I just wanted to say a big (warm and summery) welcome.

Each January here at Sustainability in Style we explore the reoccurring series New Year, New ConsYOUmer. This theme began way back when this site was my personal blog. It was born from my interpretation of the common self-improvement catch cry of ‘New Year, New You’. A slogan that’s founded in a desire for New Year’s resolve to change for the better. As part of my (at the time of inception) personal exploration of Sustainable living, I changed the narrative of the slogan to look at the way I was consuming the world around me, from fashion to waste, to how I was interacting with the natural surroundings on my daily walk. Resources on this page reflect the diversity of this interpretation.

We here at Sustainability in Style believe that you can be a ‘new’ you this year if you choose to do so. However, we think you’re pretty perfect just as you are, and that the resolutions or goals aside, the new year can be harnessed as an opportunity for mindful reflection on how you interact with the world around you.

Welcome the New Year with authenticity and big love.

This page is your portal to the New Year, New ConsYOUmer content. There’s loads of suggestions on how you can interpret this theme in your own way to work with your personal values. Take what you need from this information and leave the rest.

Traditionally the beginning of the New Year is associated with resolutions. We resolve to do things differently, to be a better person, or perhaps we lay to rest a habit or idea from our past. These promises can carry from year to year without true resolve. This could be due to a lack of motivation (consider if your resolutions match up with your Values Motivators), the scale of the resolution being too large, or a lack of systems in place to make our resolve part of our daily life.

We’ve provided worksheets in the past with our grandiose to go-for-it goal approach, the most recent one is available for you to download (for free).

Once you’ve worked through it or know what you might want to work towards this year, feel free to share your resolve below. Sharing (just one of our eight-part toolkit for living life in Sustainable Style minus the eco overwhelm) your resolve with someone else, either online or in real life, promotes personal accountability. For many of us, the promise to ourselves, combined with the decision to share with others will increase the likelihood of taking steps towards actioning our ‘go-for-it’ steps.

We suggest that you begin your New Year, New ConsYOUmer journey by checking out out Values Motivators Quiz to work out what you really value.

Download our free New Year, New ConsYOUmer worksheet to inspire transformative thought processes when making plans for the year ahead. The worksheet shows you an easy way to break large scale visions down to ‘go-for-it’ approaches you can action today, for a better tomorrow.

This is your New Year, New ConsYOUmer worksheet designed to get you thinking about how you can take action in Sustainable Style this year. We take your big-picture ideas and simplify them down into smaller ‘go-for-it’ actionable steps!

Have you seen our monthly magazine ‘Live Life in Sustainable Style’?

It’s the newest addition to our suite of tools designed to help simplify sustainability so you can take action on the things you care about (minus the eco-overwhelm). The content ties together our monthly ‘Take Action’ theme. In a fast-paced media-saturated landscape, we hope that this way of sharing will provide you access to all our useful tools, without feeling lost or overwhelmed. Each month we will send you the latest copy of the magazine and our most recent downloadable worksheet to your inbox (you will only receive one email a month from us). You will get reminders via our social media channels of what content we’re championing throughout the month.

We hope that you enjoy getting your Sustainable Style fix in this easy-to-read format and that it gives you a break from the abundance of social media updates and overflowing inboxes we now navigate daily.

Are you keen to level up your Sustainably Stylish learning? We are now offering online work-at-your-own-pace courses based on our popular Sustainability Education workshop events. These workshops have only been available in real life in the past. Still, we’ve listened and know that Sustainably Stylish folks join us from across the globe, which is why we’ve started converting these courses to interactive online delivery format. Benefit from Sustainability in Style founder, Katie Robert’s years of academic learning, research, and teaching in sustainability education, environmental science, fashion, business, and yoga/meditation with these workshops (with e-booklets). Without time or sizeable financial investments.

The symbol for the New Year, New ConsYOUmer is the butterfly. After hatching from an egg, the caterpillar explores the world around it spending most of its time feeding on vegetation. Sometimes the caterpillar can eat so much that it causes damage to the systems it relies on, especially when its populations are in large numbers sharing a finite space. The consumption of the world around it makes the caterpillar fat with life. Causing these ‘hungry for change’ consumers to increase in size so rapidly their exoskeleton tightens up, and they have to shed their skin to make space.

There comes the point in the caterpillar’s life where they are done with their caterpillar ways of consuming. At this point, a full transformation is required. They move from their lava caterpillar form into a pupa, (also known as a cocoon or chrysalis). In this transformative space, the caterpillar undergoes a total transformation, emerging as a butterfly. The butterfly differs from the caterpillar in that it balances its time-consuming nectar (where it services vegetation as a pollinator), with other activities such as flying (some travel more than 4.5k kilometres), and reproducing,

We chose to share the story of the butterfly with you to inspire your journey. Many of us have been raised in cultures or households where excess consumption is the norm. We may become full of stuff, experience, or knowledge and need to shed a layer. The New You, New ConsYOUmer theme is aimed at transformative thinking. Taking some time out to really assess how you’ve been consuming, if it’s absorbed your resources (be it time, space, or money) and put in place some processes to help you transform in ways that matter to you, based on what you REALLY value. So rather than shedding one caterpillar skin for another, find a way to let your actions become butterflies of change!

Let the image of the butterfly be your reminder of this.

Have you heard about our live book club meet ups? They began in 2020 as a way to connect (and stay sane) during the pandemic. We meet up once a week for an hour via Zoom, and talk about what’s happening in our lives, what we learned from this week’s reading (and associated activities) and how our learning influences our Sustainably Stylish Self. Book club attendees get access to private book club content course pages with prompts, activities and additional sustainability focused readings. Each week our Zoom catch up is summarised in a video recording (we don’t record the live zoom because it’s your private discussion group) so that any wonderful revelations can be shared with those joining in at a later date.

The best part about our Read: Book Club Live is that it’s totally free to join.

Once our book club sessions are complete, the course content will be available as a ‘work-at-your-own-pace’ offering in our members site launching in 2021. Enabling our members to read through solo or organise a group with some other Mindful Living HQ members.

Find out about our latest Book Club session here.
